River City Garden Centre opened in Havre de Grace on April 8th 2006 by Bill and Gay Lynn Price. As an avid gardener Bill was frustrated by the lack of variety of plants available in the area of Harford County. Sure, you can buy lots of the same things at the mass merchandisers but you could never find much of a variety or helpful suggestions for unique gardening options. A neighbor of Bill and Gay Lynn purchased a piece of real estate with a dilapidated garden center; the idea was sparked to bring a new garden center to Harford County and surrounding communities. Four and a half tons of debris removal, a lot of paint, sweat and tears later, the River City Garden Centre was born.
(The photos might give you some idea of what we had to clean up. Yikes!)
Bill is the current Chair of Harford County Cultural Arts Board and is active in local theatre. Gay Lynn is a drama instructor at C. Milton Wright High School. The managers of River City are Julie and Gary Newberry. Julie, a native of Havre de Grace, is Gay Lynn’s daughter. Julie and Gary recently moved back to the town of Havre de Grace after living in the Bethany Beach area. This past November they welcomed an addition to the family. Little Alexia joins their dog Marley, the unofficial greeter of River City. You can stop by and see Marley, usually basking in the sun at the front door, and give him a scratch. He’ll love you forever.
Oh - and by the way, here's how the place turned out!
UPDATE! - Now that our little Lexi is growing up, we thought we'd share a new photo. We know we're biased, but isn't she adorable?
